Idaho Falls Fiber launches 2.5 Gig Internet Service

Idaho Falls Fiber is expanding its high-speed internet offerings with the launch of 2.5 Gigabit (2.5Gbps) service, giving residential customers in Idaho Falls access to even faster internet speeds through the city’s municipally-owned, open-access fiber network.

 

The 2.5 Gig service provides download and upload speeds of 2,500 Mbps and is designed for households with multiple connected devices, heavy internet usage, home offices, streaming, gaming, large file transfers and other applications that benefit from increased bandwidth. “Technology and the way people use the internet have changed significantly since we first launched our residential fiber pilot,” said Idaho Falls Power and Idaho Falls Fiber General Manager Chris Fredericksen. “We’re excited to continue investing in the network and giving customers access to faster speeds while building on the infrastructure we already have in place.”

 

Unlike a traditional internet network where the infrastructure and internet service are provided by the same company, Idaho Falls Fiber operates as an open-access network. Idaho Falls Fiber owns and maintains the fiber infrastructure, while participating internet service providers use the network to offer internet services directly to customers.

This model gives residents the ability to choose from available providers and service plans while allowing Idaho Falls Fiber to focus on maintaining and expanding the underlying infrastructure.

 

Construction of the citywide fiber network was completed in November 2024, bringing municipally owned fiber infrastructure throughout the Idaho Falls Power service area.

“From the beginning, the goal was to leverage infrastructure Idaho Falls already owned to create a network that could benefit our community,” said Fredericksen. “The continued growth of Idaho Falls Fiber shows the long-term value of that investment.” The addition of 2.5 Gig service continues Idaho Falls Fiber’s evolution as customer demand for reliable, high-speed internet grows.
